Lucas Nickle's the new kid in town and the local bully, Steve, makes sure he knows it. Lucas gets so fed up with being bullied, he takes out his frustration on ants in his backyard in hilarious ways, like squirting them with his garden hose or stamping on the ant hill. The ants are understandably fed up with this and Zoc the ant wizard uses a potion to shrink him down to ant size! Lucas is sentenced to hard labor in the ruins and learns to be more compassionate to ants. He becomes an ant friend, then must become an ant hero when Stan Beals, the local pest control guy, who's an even bigger bully, comes to wipe out the entire colony. An "ants vs pest control" battle ensues and Zoc reluctantly accepts that Lucas may be the ants' only chance of survival.

STORYLINE:

Plot Summary: In New York, the unemployed divorced Larry Daley is a complete loser. His son Nick is very disappointed with his father that is gong to be evicted, and Larry accepts the job of night watchman in the Museum of Natural History as the substituted for three old security guards that have just retired to raise some money and pay his bills. In his first nightshift, Larry realizes that everything at the museum comes to life at night. The Museum transforms in a complete chaos with the inexperienced Larry, and he learns that since an old Egyptian stone came to the Museum in 1950, the was statues comes to life until dawn. When Larry brings his son to spend a night with him, the three old guards break in the Museum to stole the magic stone. Larry organizes the historic characters to help him to arrest the criminals and save the museum.

Fasten your seat belts and get ready for hardcore stunts and thrills, Hollywood ishtyle. Come to think of it, Bollywood hasn't churned out stylised action movies as regularly as it churns out comedies and rom-coms. There's a vacuum for sure. But LUCK fills that lacuna. Be rest assured, you haven't watched such thrills since DHOOM 2.

LUCK is more of a hi-concept film. Three decades ago, Krishna Shah's SHALIMAR narrated the adventures of a billionaire who assembles/invites criminals/gangsters from across the globe to perform the heist of a precious diamond that he possesses. The concept isn't similar here, but in this case too, a gambler assembles people from across the globe for a concept called human betting.

LUCK may not be high on story, but the concept and at least four stylised thrilling sequences make a big difference. Simply put, it makes LUCK lucky.

LUCK may have loads of thrills, but director Soham Shah ensures that the grand canvas and stylised thrills appeal to every strata of movie-going audience. Only thing, had screenplay writers Soham Shah and Rensil D'Silva worked doubly hard to come up with a watertight script, it would've only worked wonders.

After weighing the pros and cons, it can be said that LUCK rides on star power, its concept and adrenaline-pumping thrills primarily. If you're into thrillers or have been missing one, LUCK holds the key.

Different characters from different parts of the world, each with Lady Luck in their favour, are brought in to play the game of death. With millions at stake, how far will each of them go in courting danger and deceit?

The very start of the film transports you to a different world. The viewer is drawn into a world where bets are placed on humans and death-defying stunts are the order of the day. The train sequence at the very start says it all. It's a sequence that not only introduces you to the plot, but also makes a hammer-strong impact. You haven't watched something like this on the Hindi screen before.

The game of death is far more dangerous than those witnessed in the reality shows. The revolver sequence [the first challenge], the helicopter jump, the underwater sequence with sharks and the train sequence in the climax give you goose bumps and remain etched in your memory. There's a scene involving a lighter too, which is sure to draw whistles and claps.

But the film slips due its ineffectual writing. It gyrates from engrossing to bas-theek-hain towards the second hour. The romantic track, to be specific, is flaccid. Also, the climax should've concluded the moment Imran wins the jackpot money of Rs. 20 crores. Wasn't that his motive when he entered the game with his eyes wide open? So why this sudden urge to confront Sanjay Dutt after the game is over? Had the prize money doubled to Rs. 40 crores, it would've made sense. Or, for that matter, if he had a personal score to settle with Sanju, the game of death would've looked plausible. There's no motive in the first place.

Moreover, the sequence in the hospital, towards the end, may be true, medically speaking, but the question is, was it necessary in a film of this genre? Frankly, it robs the film of its seriousness and even compels you to break in a full-throated roar, a reaction that is completely unwarranted. Even Shruti Haasan's double role doesn't cut ice.

Soham Shah has made a stylish film and the fact remains that he has an eye for visuals. But Soham should've stuck to the spirit of the film, instead of getting into diversions [romance and the penultimate scene]. Salim-Sulaiman's music is vibrant and 'Aasma' is easily the pick of the lot. The background score [Amar Mohile] is electrifying. Santosh Thundiyil's cinematography matches international standards. Ditto for the sound design by Dwarak Warrier. Allan Amin's stunts and thrills are a major USP.

Sanju is perfect for this part and enacts it with natural ease. Actually, here's one role that only he could've portrayed so effectively. Imran is getting better with every film. Watch his helplessness at the start or his confidence when he takes to the stunts. Even towards the latter reels, he's very much in sync with his character.

Shruti Haasan is a star, no two opinions on that. The confidence with which she carries off this role just cannot be overlooked. Ravi Kishan is another scene-stealer. You are under the impression that he may get lost in the crowd, but he stands tall. The masses will love him.

Mithun Chakraborty is controlled and delivers a truly fine performance. Danny Denzongpa is, as always, so perfect. Very few actors have that ability to stand out in a crowd. He's one of them. Chitrashi is excellent. The sequence in the hospital is superb. Rati Agnihotri gets no scope.

On the whole, LUCK rides on star power, adrenaline-pumping thrills and a concept that's novel for the Indian screens. Despite some loose ends, these three factors primarily would ensure a Lucky journey at the box-office.

Jashnn-Movie Review

The Bhatts have often told stories that seem straight out of everyday life. Their new outing JASHNN also mirrors the thoughts of zillions of hopefuls. It's about a nobody who wants to achieve success in life, wants to live his dreams, wants to become a somebody some day. In that respect, JASHNN, with director duo Raksha Mistry and Hasnain Hyderabadwala in the driving seat, drives home the point convincingly.

You can't deny the fact that JASHNN brings back memories of the immensely likable ROCK ON!!, for JASHNN is also about a boy band, about dreams, about defeat and about success. Like ROCK ON!!, JASHNN also looks at relationships, but the relationships here are poles apart.

In this case, the protagonist [Adhyayan Suman] is living off his sister [Shahana Goswami], who is reduced to being the mistress of a wealthy entrepreneur [Humayun Saeed] and who loathes the protagonist. Actually, the relationship between the siblings and also the volatile relationship between Adhyayan and Humayun are the mainstay of the film. Sequences between them expose the stark reality of life.

But JASHNN is not without its share of hiccups. The romantic track could've been as intense as the volatile ones. Also, it gets long drawn towards the second hour and robs the film of its sheen to an extent. But the climax more than compensates for the blemishes. Thankfully!

All said and done, JASHNN is yet another compelling tale from the house of Bhatts. Super music coupled with bravura performances from its principal cast makes JASHNN an interesting watch.

Akash [Adhyayan Suman] thirsts to become a singing icon. But though he has dreams in his heart, he is unable to find that distinctive voice that he can call his own, that will propel him to the top. Only when he confronts a bitter truth - that he is freeloading off his elder sister Nisha [Shahana Goswami], who, in order to offer him a decent lifestyle, has become the mistress of a rich businessman Aman Bajaj [Humayun Saeed] - is he is able to touch his inner core.

Call it irony or a twist of fate, but the person who sees him through this dark night and mentors him when he's down and out is none other than the sister of the person who he hates most in the world - Aman Bajaj. It is Sara [Anjana Sukhani], Aman's sister, who makes him realize that he is an extremely talented man and is simply going through a bad phase.

In the end, he not only touches his inexhaustible potential and becomes an overnight star, but also humbles his biggest detractor Aman Bajaj and in the process, lives up to the faith that his sister and Sara had in him all along.

Director duo Raksha and Hasnain step into a different domain [emotions], after attempting thrillers. And the relationships here are too complex. Some instances...

Watch out for the tiff between Adhyayan and Humayun, when the latter abuses Shahana. The subsequent sequence, when Adhyayan apologises to Humayun at his office, is heart-breaking.

Here's another. Adhyayan and Shahana enter Anjana's party and the confrontation that ensues with Humayun there. Another master stroke!

Note another sequence. In the post-interval portions, Adhyayan's demo is rejected by the music company baron and his outburst at this point. It breaks your heart!

The same night, he takes refuge in drinks and even robs money from another guest at the hotel. What happens thereafter is astonishing.

In the climax, Adhyayan calls his sister on stage and makes her accept the trophy from Humayun. Clapworthy, but deeply emotional!

But, as mentioned earlier, JASHNN loses its grip during the romantic sequences. The film dips in the second hour, which is long drawn and half as convincing at times. The low phase that Adhyayan goes through could've been more effective and shorter.

Director duo Raksha and Hasnain show sparks of brilliance in the above-mentioned scenes and they get solid help from writer Shagufta Rafique, whose screenplay is watertight, barring the portions mentioned above. You expect every Bhatt movie to be embellished with melodious and soulful music and the songs in JASHNN are seeped in melody, especially the final track. Dialogues are powerful and dipped in acid at times. Camerawork is up to the mark.

All four actors shine in their respective roles. Adhyayan Suman takes giant strides. Note the helplessness, the sorrow, the dejection and the eventual exhilaration. This is Adhyayan's showreel. Humayun Saeed, from across the border, is brilliant. This film makes you wake up to this talent, which gives the film a rich texture. Here's an actor to watch. Shahana Goswami is already going from strength to strength and JASHNN only proves that she's matchless. She handles her part with amazing understanding. Anjana Sukhani is a revelation. Again, this film should act as a showreel for her. She's excellent.

On the whole, JASHNN is a moving tale with three USPs - its music, the emotional quotient and the performances by its four actors. Despite some loose ends, it should slowly and steadily win over cinegoers based on these three factors.

Reviews

There are moments that have echoes of "Dostana" but this is different and is a change from the other movies this year. It is one of the better ones to watch and have a good laugh and enjoy.
A Good comedy and worth watching.

Paying Guest-Movie Review

Seems - Subhash Ghai’s Midas touch got the curse of all malicious celestial objects across the universe. Oh, well - this movie is released under the banner of Mukata Arts (belongs to Subhash Ghai).

Movie buffs were quite perturbed for a while due to the tussle between multiplex owners and production banner. But alas, the new releases continue to leave them with horrid experience. When well known story / script writers are venturing to Film Direction - it is quite natural to expect a decent enough script. But alas, Paritosh Painter, the Script Writer and Director of this flick, {also, the creative mind behind the Screen Play / Script of Dhamaal } was simply trying to spl

ash insipid goo of concocted Khichdi which is enough for movie buffs to rely on alternate source of entertainment.
The advertisement reveal that the movie is an adaptation of a popular theatrical drama but many good old Marathi Movie lovers might not have forgot the popular comedy "Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi" directed by Sachin. I remember, watching a serial starring Mehmood in DD with similar theme during childhood.

The story is revolving around typical losers with average intellect who resort to follies, representing the agonies of "Great Indian Diaspora". Well, this is not the central theme but just a frivolous attempt to find reason to transport the entire cast and crew to Pataya, the sex capital of the world (Of course, Pataya of Thailand).

You have a cook, script writer, salesman of car and architect joining them later (Shreyas Talpade, Javed Jaffrey, Ashish Chowdhary and Vatsal Seth). Three of them (except the architect who joined later) lose their job and was thrown out of the home by the house owner "Kiska" (Asrani).
Their search for home ended up with a crazy sardarji Ballu (Johney Lever), who was incidentally the former employer of Shreyas Talpade. His wife (character played by Delnaz Paul) tries to entertain you with much tried out grammatical gimmicks / pronunciation circus (eg - Welding means Wedding, Foreplay means Four Plays ---- So on). The Punjabi / Bengali accent of the couple are enough to test your level of patience .

You need some hilarious situation, right? Yeah - so, here the house owner got a condition! They will not rent out the house to unmarried men. So what - Javed Jaffrey and Shreyas Talpade became women! Feel like laughing?

Okay - all of them got pairs also during the course of the movie (Neha Dhupia, Celina Jaitley, Ria Sen and Sayali Bhagat). Also, you have a Don (brother of Johney Lever) who is trying to make you laugh with his stammering / stuttering and replacing "R" with "L" (incidentally, this is the way in which a typical Thai way of pronounciation). Never saw Chunkey Pandey in such a pathetic role. I should also remember good old Paintal with Dhoty, trying his level best to entertain with Madrasi accent.

So, a bit of misunderstanding, confusion, roller coaster rides ----- and climax got characters right from Osama Bin Laden , Shehensha, Krish, Spider Man, Umrao Jan ----- God, I don’t have words to appreciate the marvellous creative head who proposed this idea.

If rip roaring laughter riot is reported at any theatre - that might be out of sheer frustration of movie buffs or producers might have engaged "professional ticklers".

Music - Sajid - Wajid might have taken it easy. I am not able to remind any tunes so far. That says it all.

Cinematography -Selvakumar did his job but I am sure, the scenic beauty of Pataya and the monuments of Bangkok are not captured well. I have worked in Bangkok and have been to Pataya and Phuket and hence could swear on it with authenticity.

Editing - If the entire movie if goofed up, what is there to ensure continuity and flow. But yes, Manish More did his job.

In short, the summer disappointment continues.

Ofcourse, this is better than Kal Kisne Dekha but won’t entertain you like 99.

It s a rare occurrence that a band is able to seemingly reinvent a genre
overnight, let alone accomplish such a task on a debut. Leave it to I See
Stars to set the bar just a bit higher. This six-piece electronic/screamo
hybrid has been the object of a massive amount of hype and with good reason
Vocalist Devin Oliver leads the charge with a vocal prowess much akin to that
of current Saosin front-man Cove Reber, and he is a mere 16 years old!
Devin s sheer talent, be it his soon-to-be trademark shrills, or his ability
to craft wholesome, intelligent lyrics, along with support of the remaining
members, who s ages also average around 16, is sure to put similar bands that
have been at it for many years to shame

Just three notes into 3D, Devin s vocals light the air and I See Stars blows
the doors open with Project Wakeup , an extremely guitar driven song laced
with a mesmerizing synth backing. The track displays the versatility of
Devin s voice with the various transitions from a peaceful swoon to a
violent, yet controlled, scream. One thing immediately noticed throughout the
album is how masterfully the keys blend in, as similar bands have the
tendency to abuse it s use, while on 3D, every key is in balance and makes
sense. The title track from the album, 3D, will likely be the record s
first single, and really explores the vocal skill of the 16-year-old front
man. Significantly more upbeat than the other songs alongside a real
danceable melody, it is perhaps the most structurally sound song on the
album. The rest of 3D follows suit, with each track as infectious and
captivating as the last, playing out like an album of an already well
established and recognized band, rather than a group of teenagers

It s clear that I See Stars has a long and bright future ahead of them
Having already shared the stage with the likes of scene heavyweight s A
Skylit Drive and Dance Gavin Dance, this youthful band is prepped and ready
to take the world by storm. The album is being received strongly thus far
throughout the critical world, and most of it s acclaim can be attributed to
the extremely strong vocals on the album. Though they are still young, one
can only hope with a such an awe-inspiring debut, they will blossom into
something truly amazing. 3D is merely step one of I See Stars plot to take

'Tennessee' (R) - Movie Review

WHAT IT’S ABOUT?

Fifteen years ago Carter Armstrong gave up a football scholarship and a promising future in order to help his mother and brother leave Knoxville and escape an abusive father. Now his mother is dead, his brother has been diagnosed with acute Leukemia and he’s stuck in a nowhere job, full of regret. When Carter finds he isn’t a match for a bone marrow transplant that could save his brother’s life, he makes an incredibly tough choice to leave their modest trailer in Albuquerque, hit the road and find the estranged father who may be his brother’s one last hope.

WHO’S IN IT?

As brothers Carter and Ellis, Adam Rothenberg and Ethan Peck are completely believable as siblings who have survived great adversity with the tightest of bonds. Rothenberg gives a touching and perfectly nuanced performance as a man who clearly knows he gave up a future for the sake of family, only to have deep regrets about the road not taken. Peck, grandson of movie icon Gregory Peck, proves acting talent doesn’t fall far from the tree with his indelible portrait of the stricken Ellis. Tennessee's real revelation is Mariah Carey as Krystal, a Texas waitress stuck in a dead-end marriage to a not-so-kind police officer. Seeing a way out, she joins up with the brothers and accompanies them as far as Nashville, where her dreams of a music career get an unexpected boost. Carey is completely authentic and memorable, particularly in a scene where she gets to sing in an open mic contest. This mega-pop star can finally put the disaster of her notorious flop, 2001’s Glitter, far behind her.

WHAT’S GOOD?

Director Aaron Woodley is not afraid to let the budding relationship between these three travelers play out in real time. The film is slow-paced, but there is an ultimate payoff, and it’s a rewarding one. Tennessee has the distinct feel of America’s back roads and never feels false or contrived, a neat trick since the story is ripe for sentimental twists the filmmaker thankfully avoids like the plague.

WHAT’S BAD?

It takes a while to get into the rhythms of these two very damaged brothers, but give Tennessee a chance, and it all kicks in, especially with the welcome introduction of Carey’s character. The actors bring it home. Only Lance Reddick as Frank, her crummy hubby, comes off as one-dimensional.

FAVORITE SCENE?

Carey does a splendid job on an original song, “Right to Dream,” in the small Nashville club where she gets a chance to sing. Key to the scene’s believability is that we see her as Krystal, a small-town aspiring performer, and not superstar Mariah Carey when she’s up there on stage.

NETFLIX OR MULTIPLEX?

Like many independently-made dramas, this one will struggle to stay afloat in theaters. Hopefully, it will have a strong afterlife on DVD, where many more people will happily discover that Mariah can actually act!

Team - The Force Been there, seen that, moved on… That's one phrase we keep using to express various things in life. We use it for cinema too. As viewers, we've moved on to far more interesting subjects. Films that we can relate to and indentify with. Films that marry realism and make-believe beautifully. Films that not only entertain, but enlighten too.

Watching a film like TEAM THE FORCE in today's jet-age is a complete put off. Vintage cars and vintage furniture are still in demand, but vintage subjects aren't. Films like TEAM THE FORCE were the order of the day, a decade or more than a decade ago. But times have changed.

Nothing works in this team, frankly!

TEAM THE FORCE tells the story of three friends [Sohail Khan, Yash Tonk and Vrajesh Hirjee], who want to make it big in the music industry. They live with a doting person [Kulbhushan Kharbanda] and his family at their bungalow as paying guests. This gentleman considers them as his own sons, even finances them and prods them to launch their own video album.

This gentleman gets an extortion call from an underworld don [Sayaji Shinde]; he wants to usurp the bungalow. How the three youngsters take him to task and settle the issue forms the remainder of the film.

If the story is outright predictable, the direction is simply directionless. The director and the writer actually need a reality check. Music is of fast-forward quality.

Sohail, Yash and Vrajesh ham to the hilt. Amrita Arora makes an entry only when skin show is required. Sayaji Shinde is loud, but the interaction with his wife at several points of the film is truly funny. Kulbhushan Kharbanda looks disinterested.

On the whole, TEAM THE FORCE has no force!
